Greenhouse IPM Workshops

For the past several years the Department has held an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) workshop at various greenhouses around the state in the spring. These workshops are great opportunities for growers to share their experience with IPM including biocontrol, scouting and record keeping.

The 2011 workshop was held at Morrison Development Center. Director/Seedling Program, Kevin Kearns, showed how they use sanitation, scouting and biocontrol to prevent and manage pests. Their IPM program allows them to use their year-round greenhouses for education and production without pesticides. Our 2010 workshop was held at Everlasting Farm in Bangor in conjunction with the Mid-Maine Growers Association. In 2009 Nancy and Bruce Stedman of Little River Flower Farm in Buxton shared their experiences with biocontrols and organic production.

Want to share and learn more from other growers? Interested in hosting a workshop at your Maine greenhouse? Contact Kathy Murray or call (207)287-7616.

Tri-State Greenhouse IPM Program

The Tri-state Greenhouse IPM Program is a collaboration among growers and specialists from Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. These workshops are for greenhouse growers of all types, extension specialists and professional pest managers. Growers of all experience levels will learn something new.

The program is held annually in January at Longfellow's Greenhouses in Manchester, ME. Check here for dates and details in late 2012.

Information from past workshop is available on UVM's Greenhouse IPM website.

Northern New England Greenhouse Growers Network (GreenGrower)

Is an internet service to promote communication on greenhouse pest and crop management among growers, extension specialists and researchers in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. It was established through the Tri-State Greenhouse IPM Program. It is to be used for posting questions about how to manage a pest or crop production problem, pest alerts, recommendations about which management strategies work and which don’t, announcements of conferences and workshops on pest management issues and other news related to pest or crop management in greenhouses that might interest subscribers. The more subscribers share their knowledge, the stronger this regional network will be. Please share this with your peers and help us pass the word along!

For more information about the Tri-State Greenhouse IPM Program, or if you wish to be added to the list,  please contact Cheryl E Frank (cfrank@uvm.edu, 802-656-5434) or Margaret Skinner (mskinner@uvm.edu, 802- 656-5440) at the University of Vermont.

Nursery Survey

In 2008, 2009, and 2010 we conducted a survey for invasive introduced pests in cooperation with nursery growers throughout the state.  Pests we surveyed for included pine tree lappet moth, summer fruit tortrix moth, old world bollworm, variegated golden tortrix moth, siberian silk moth, emerald ash borer, Asian longhorned beetle and hemlock woolly adelgid. To date, none of the targeted pests were found in nurseries surveyed.
