Eastern Equine EncephalitisEastern equine encephalitis (EEE) is a mosquito-borne viral disease. EEE virus (EEEV) occurs in the eastern half of the United States where it causes disease in humans, horses, and some bird species. Because of the high mortality rate, EEE is regarded as one of the most serious mosquito-borne diseases in the United States. Many persons infected with EEE will have no obvious symptoms. In those persons who do develop illness, symptoms of EEE range from mild-flu like illness to inflammation of the brain, coma and death. There is no specific treatment for EEE. This disease is best prevented by avoiding exposure to mosquitoes. EEE has never been reported in a Maine resident to date. However, in 2008 there was a fatal case of EEE diagnosed in a Massachusetts resident who may have acquired the infection while vacationing in Cumberland County. Posters and Brochures:
